PIETY

“You didn’t come yesterday,” Wraith said. “I was worried.”

I sat down on a rock near the spot that had become ours. “I had a lot to do yesterday and couldn’t get away. I’ve got things to discuss with you. Eat while I talk, okay?”

My eyes roamed down his white legs to the wound. It was all but gone, only a few pale pink marks marred the skin.

Obediently, Wraith opened the canvas bag and pulled out left-overs from my wedding feast. I hoped he wouldn’t be upset when he found out the source of the food.

“I’ve discovered why you feel I’m your mate. And why I feel as if I’m yours, as well,” I started and held up my hand when he began to comment. “Let me finish, okay?”

He settled back to eat while I took up the story. “A podmate in danger can draw to her a singleton to increase the size of her pod. I think I did that when I was running from those men the other day.”

“But you don’t have an existing pod,” he argued.

“I do, it seems. Before I met you, I met a man in New Sodom. When we were shopping. I thought he was human, but he’s not. And I feel for him what I feel for you. I’m his podmate, too. And his brothers will be arriving shortly to join us. They’ve been searching the galaxy for me. Supposedly, coming to Earth is usually against the rules. You shouldn’t have come. But Danans have been given permission to find their mates here, as long as they don’t expose themselves, and as long as the woman is willing.”

“No!” Wraith cried, jumping to his feet and backing away.

The food from my wedding feast scattered on the ground.

I stared at him in surprise. I thought he would feel good to be part of a family again.

“Why not? It explains our situation, doesn’t it?” I asked, perplexed.

“I won’t be a part of a Danan pod,” he declared. “Don’t ask it of me. You have no idea what they did.”

“Who did? Not my pod, because they aren’t old enough. They’re about your age, I think. Whatever was done was not their doing.”

He stared at me for a moment, his eyes wild. “All Danans are betrayers. There are no exceptions.”

“You are Danan. Your brothers and parents were Danans. Were they betrayers?” I countered heatedly.

The woman I was a week ago would never have considered speaking up in this way. Especially not to a furious male like this one.

But I hadn’t lied to Visor about Wraith. I knew he would never hurt me, no matter what.

“We were the betrayed!” he yelled down at me, his wild, white starburst eyes so bright I couldn’t look at them without blinking.

“So, Danan warriors can either be the betrayed or the betrayers?” I asked, trying to keep my voice as calm as possible this time. “Just like humans can be either? There’s good and bad in all people. And my pod, our pod, is good.
